The subway blogs-- Violence on the subway
65I enter the A train this morning to the sound of women screaming loudly. Whatever had transpired before had left the women pissed.
The fighting women of the subway
I was just in time to hear a woman standing, tell the woman seated in front of her to do something unspeakable to her mother. At this, the seated woman kicked her. Yes, that's what I said. The seated woman extended her foot like a frightened horse, and gave the woman standing before her a solid kick on her knee while yelling, " you b....tch, don't speak about my mother like that." The standing woman dove into the seated woman's face, hit her on the cheek, and proceeded to strangle her. At this all the passengers close to the fighting woman ran away: somehow leaving a clear space in a train that had been packed to the brim just seconds before. I watched as even the men backed away from the fighting women, and was amazed at such a reaction.
Maybe somebody should have helped
There is currently national outrage at an incident at a Los Angeles high school where fifteen to twenty students watched while a fifteen years old girl was raped. None of the onlooking studenst said or did anything to help the girl. Why are we outraged? Could it be that our kids are just mirroing the behaviour of the adults in their lives. What happened to 'I am my brothers keeper' ? Are we so fearful as a society that we rather somebody lose their life than standing up and saying or doing something to part a fight. Where does courage come in? I would love to know your thoughts.
As that fight ended, I exited the train. Oh well, another day, another subway ride.
